A Paint Out brings artists together to paint in a specific area at a given time, competing for prizes, time with their fellow artists.

This paint out is unique, allowing artists of all skill levels to participate. Mount Dora Center for the Arts (MDCA) believes giving beginners an opportunity to hone their skills is important.

The Quick Draw Competition will take place at the Sydonie Mansion on Wednesday morning, November 9th. The grounds and home offers an abundance of scenes, ready to be captured on canvas.

The collected works from both the paint out and the quick draw, will be exhibited beginning November 11th at the Aritists Opening Reception from 6pm to 8pm at the MDCA Art Gallery. Admission is free to the public and is suitable for all ages.

Barbara Duncan Oritz , the featured painter in the exhibit says, “I remember my first drawing of a rose when I was nine years old and I had a pencil or paintbrush in my hand ever since. My father was my inspiration.”

Ortiz studied Fine Art at Monmouth University and at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. In the 80′s and 90′s she lived in Mexico, on the Caribbean. Upon returning to the states, she settled her family in Florida and began taking classes at Crealde School of Art. She also studied at the Longboat Key Center for the Arts and the Mount Dora Center for the Arts. She says, “I had the privilege of attending workshops under the direction of renowned artists; Greg Kreutz, Stacy Barter, Lori Putnam and Calvin Liang. For the last eight years, I have sought to continually advance and hone my skills. The learning never ends. I believe, that is one of the reasons why I love being an artist.”

She works in oils and occasionally watercolors. Her paintings are representational and she works frequently in Plein Air, Alla Prima for the most part. “My desire is to capture what I initially had a strong visual response to and then to clearly convey that visual sensation in paint. Hopefully, the final painting elicits a response from you, the viewer.”

She greatly admires and is influenced by such masters as; Sargent, Anders Zorn, Cezanne, Sorolla and contemporary masters, Richard Schmid and David Leffel.
